Ripples and Grain
2021
Ripples and Grain is a generative sculpture and drawing series that explores the quiet tension between natural forms and machine logic. Created for an exhibition in Toronto, the work consists of three CNC-milled wooden panels and three corresponding robotic pencil drawings—each tracing the ephemeral gesture of ripples spreading across still water.
Using custom computer algorithms, the patterns were derived from simulated water disturbances, translated into physical form through two processes: one subtractive, carving into the grain of solid wood; the other additive, where a scribbling x–y robot rendered ripples in graphite on paper with a fragile, human-like imperfection.
The material contrast between the warmth of wood and the immediacy of pencil marks highlights the dialogue between permanence and transience, the digital and the organic. Ripples and Grain invites viewers to reflect on how subtle patterns emerge from both nature and code—mirroring each other through different textures and temporalities.
